Welcome Calm: NEW Modestine® Tea Ritual Boxes

Hello, loves. My name is E, and I am excited to be part of the @ModestineTeas community. Every few weeks I’ll share a new blog, from product updates to tips for intentional self-love, and conversations with our founder, Laura, along with other amazing women in the wellness space. As the writer and thinker Audre Lorde reminds us: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Laura’s work is particularly inspiring for me as a creative (@WomenCreativesChat) because she is always reminding us to center wellness.

As a global collective, we are wading through uncertain times. Take a break from the constant stress for a few moments, pull up a chair, center radical self-care, and pour  your favorite Modestine® Tea blend, as you read about the latest offering: Modestine®Tea Ritual Boxes.

More and more (due to quarantine), people are spending time at home. The idea of centering mindful rituals is so important! How did you come to this practice in your own life? Share how it inspired you to create the Modestine® Tea Ritual boxes.

As a little girl growing up in Grenada, I was exposed to healing rituals at a very young age.  When my cousins and I or locals within the community experienced trauma through cuts, bruises, bites, as well as emotional wounds, my Grandmother and her sisters made salves and other healing concoctions with medicinal bush growing in their backyards.

Healing was often accompanied by a gathering where we all met for a cup of tea, told stories, and made each other laugh.  We found ways to elevate joy as a path to our wellness.

Grenada, an island that has experienced years of colonization, has seen its fair share of trauma.  Leaning back to the healing rituals that helped the island champion through its pain was the bridge I used to help me move forward in creating these Ritual boxes.

I understand the boxes include “tools that facilitate spiritual practices,” can you talk more about the specific practices, and how you think leaning into these can help us with the new norm we’re living through?

Sure!  The pandemic has left us with a myriad of states: shock, fear, worry, anxiety, insomnia and disappointments.  As I tuned in to Spirit while designing each box, many Spiritual practices showed up that can help ease the mind and body when the going gets tough, etc.

Let me share those with you all:

Meditation: Grounding the body during times of high stress needs to begin with an overall scan of where we’re unintentionally creating disharmony within ourselves.  Overeating or stress eating, which results in digestive upsets, is one factor that contributes to disharmony.  The Post-Meal Ritual box was created to give aid to this kind of upset.

Healing with Sound & Meditation

Sitting with Self/Teatime Ritual: Nothing settles the mind and centers the spirit like a cup of tea.  Spending time mindfully sipping a cup of herbal blend brings one into the present moment, realigns your focus to the here and now, which soothes anxieties and helps to calm worries about the next day, or the week ahead.

Positive Self-Talk: Speaking kindly to our bodies plays a huge roll in spiritual wellness.

As women, we are often taught to put others first. Self-care is still radical for many women. What mantra, affirmation, or quote helps you work through the guilt, and claim your worthiness?

Ah, right now I’m vibin’ on a personal quote I wrote for the Sanctuary boxes, “When the world outside becomes dark, I lean into the light in the treasure of my Sanctuary.”

I love leaning into these words from my old, wise Grandmother, “Always fill up your lamp with kerosene so that it’s light never burns out”.

Also, the very oldest saying about self-care: “Self-Care isn't selfish. You can’t pour from an empty cup,” have long been one of my top favorites.

Simple words of affirmation such as “I AM WORTHY of my personal time and space. It is ok for me to tend to myself. It’s ok for others if I tend to myself.”

Modestine® Tea is always collaborating with amazing boss babes! Who did you work with on this project, and what can we find from them in our boxes?

I hold fast to the standards of my Grandmother’s traditions of working with women and community.  It’s always an honor to collaborate with like-minded women.

For this collaboration, I worked with @spiritualistabeautique: Her mystical candles and the stories attached to them are amazing and aligns well with MODESTINE®.

@anastridendeavoroils: Ylang Ylang essential oil contain strong grounding properties.  Astrid knows her craft, so I left the idea up to her to choose which oil is best to relax the pandemic anxieties, etc.

@jonathancastrodesigns: Jonathan is a local Harlem ceramist whom I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside @harlemmakerscollective pop-up markets.  Of course, I had to have one of my community members in the box.  His attention to detail is phenomenal.  The Zen Tea Vase was created specifically for Modestine.

@annalustberg: Another Harlem native.  Anna is a dope Illustrator.  We worked on many projects before, including my first website and Modestine’s sales card.  This time, we worked to create art for a beautiful quote I created for the Sanctuary.  Each card has the reminder quote to remind them of where they can resort to when times are rough.  On the backside of there is a code to shop products in the Sanctuary.

Now that these beautiful ritual boxes are available, is there a special offer? And, will we be able to subscribe, and get boxes monthly or bi-monthly soon?

Yes!  Each card contains a quote I created, emphasizing the importance of home as a sanctuary. For now, the program is bi-monthly.  As we progress into Fall and Winter, boxes will include products that will help to address cold weather feels while still facilitating calm and comfort during the current pandemic.
